New Name Reflects Belmont's Growth, Expanded Services
by Rebecca HoffmanBelmont Housing Resources for WNY is the new name of the affordable housing and community development organization founded in Buffalo, NY in 1977 as Belmont Shelter Corp.
"Belmont has been producing quality affordable housing opportunities for families, seniors and special needs individuals from the start, and we are proud to have assisted more than 26,000 households last year alone," said Elizabeth Huckabone, Belmont president. "We remain deeply committed to that mission. This name change more accurately reflects our growth and expanded services over three decades."
Based at 1195 Main St. in Buffalo, Belmont also has offices in Hamburg and North Tonawanda, through which it administers a variety of programs for municipalities, develops and manages affordable housing, and provides home ownership counseling. In 2009, Belmont's rental assistance to area landlords injected $26 million into the region's economy.
The organization's current priorities include improving the area's housing stock, particularly addressing aging structures in Buffalo and first-ring suburbs; implementing homelessness prevention programs, and ensuring equal access to affordable housing and successful home ownership opportunities.
Belmont Housing Resources for WNY has 105 employees.
